This past weekend (22nd February 2025), the False Bay Community gathered at Dalebrook beach for a special Mission Blue event – a day of connection, storytelling, and immersive experiences with the ocean. This event brought together our champion organisations and ocean lovers of all ages to celebrate False Bay and the people who cherish and protect it.
A highlight of the day was the presence of “Her Deepness” Dr Sylvia Earle, who joined our local community members in sharing personal stories about the ocean and its significance in their lives. The event showcased the deep-rooted relationships that both young and old people have with False Bay’s waters.
Dr Sylvia Earle and the False Bay community

The program began with three young speakers, each sharing their personal connection to the ocean. Kimberly Mubaiwa spoke eloquently and powerfully, speaking of curiosity and the sense of belonging that the ocean provides. Jamila Janna shared her story and reminded the community of how far we have come and still have to go. Jethro Perry reminded us that we should be thankful for the ocean, and shared those memories that he held most dear. Their passion set the tone for the day, one of hope and responsibility for the future.
Following the youth, three community “elders” reminisced on their lifelong experiences with the bay. Rob Adams told us stories of local history. Dr Nathalie Viljoen shared her journey into marine science and education, as well as pointing out some of her past students in the audience. Their words carried wisdom and reminded the youth on how far we have come as a country. These stories painted a picture of resilience, cultural heritage, and the ocean’s enduring importance to the False Bay community.
Dr. Sylvia Earle then spoke as an international elder of the ocean. She reminded the audience of the urgent need to protect marine environments. And how still today countless wildlife species are being hunted for food. With her signature optimism, she delivered a message of hope: that every individual has the power to make a difference. She emphasised that False Bay, like many of the world’s marine ecosystems, holds the potential for recovery and continued wonder if people work together to safeguard it. Her words resonated deeply, leaving the audience inspired and motivated.
After the speeches, the celebration continued with hands-on activities led by champion organisations dedicated to False Bay’s protection. Cape RADD had kids use snorkel gear to explore the Dalebrook tidal pool under the supervision of our marine biologist guides. We also set up a microscope exhibit where guests could look at the microscopic life found on the rocky shore. Aonyx Marine Experiences and their staff took some people on a rocky shore explore. There was also a community group discussion session led by Dr Joanne Peers. Visions for safeguarding the Bay were discussed among community members. As the day ended, people left with renewed inspiration, ready to carry mission blue’s message of hope and action.
Ocean activities with the community

We at Cape RADD, along with our co-champions at the Two Oceans Aquarium, thank all who joined us on this community day event. We look forward to celebrating our beautiful bay together again soon. This event reinforced that together we can ensure that it thrives for many generations to come.
