The Cape RADD are a team of dedicated marine biologists and conservationists who bring a wealth of expertise, a shared commitment to marine conservation and a lot of fun to the Marine biology field course. Their varied and specialized knowledge, experience and skill sets ensure that every student gains a broad field biologist ‘Tool Box’ with a foundation of confidence and competence. Mike Barron: Co-founder and director of Cape RADD. Mike has 20 years of dive and field work experience from various institutions, NGO’s and companies from around the world. A commercial diver, PADI and SSI specialty Instructor, skipper and freediver, Mike is a waterman and loves to pass on his knowledge and passion for the oceans. His enthusiasm for the marine world is infectious, and he is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of marine scientists.

Dylan Irion: Co-founder of Cape RADD and a seasoned researcher. Dylan specializes in data analysis and statistical modeling. His proficiency with R stats and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) equips students with the tools to analyze and interpret complex ecological data from the data collected. Dylan is able to simplify complex statistical concepts and make it accessible to all our students.

Mark Fitzgibbon: A Cape RADD course instructor. A commercial diver, marine biologist and passionate Science communicator, Mark’s background in the aquarist world and parasitology gives him a unique field of study. Mark’s love for underwater exploration and field work enriches the course experience with his personality and caring nature. Mark is rarely out of a wetsuit during field courses, and makes it look cool.. (see photo below)

Dani Maia: Head marine guide and Ocean hub Co-ordinator. Dani’s passion lies in engaging with the public and blending her marine expertise and education on our Citizen science projects. Dani’s area of interest is invertebrate ID and biodiversity and loves taking photos and flicking through an ID book. She co-ordinates all the eco-tourism trips and the dive centre training as well. She is our mother goose…

Dr Sam Manning: Sam is a dedicated conservationist with a diverse career in wildlife and ecological research. Holding a PhD in Wildlife Conservation from Imperial College London, her work has encompassed community-based conservation projects in Madagascar and managing telemetry studies on Amur tigers and leopards in the Russian Far East. Sam is our International Outreach officer in the UK and travel to Universities and colleges to give guest lectures on the incredible biodiversity of South Africa’s marine life.

All in all, you’re in very good hands at Cape RADD at our Marine Field station in Simon’s Town, Cape Town. So come and join the team and have an adventure of a lifetime!
