At Cape RADD, the fusion of marine science, conservation, citizen science, education, and recreational scuba diving comes alive. Nestled in the stunning coastal town of Simon’s Town, South Africa, Cape RADD is not just a marine field station. At the Ocean hub we are trying to build a community of students and divers who come together with a shared mission: to explore, learn, and protect our oceans.
Cape RADD serves as a marine science and conservation field station. We offer a range of educational programs for marine biology students, conservation enthusiasts, and the public. Through citizen science initiatives and field training courses, participants engage directly with marine research with our team of trained marine scientists. This hands-on approach not only enhances learning but also fosters a deep sense of connection to the marine environment.
One of the cornerstones of Cape RADD’s mission is public engagement through citizen science. By involving the local community and visitors in scientific research, we try to democratizes marine science, increasing accessibility for everyone. We do this through our snorkel and SCUBA for science experiences and Ocean Safari’s. Participants can contribute to real-time data collection, enhancing research efforts while gaining invaluable knowledge and experience. In 2025, we will be bringing back our marine evenings! Offering public access to talks from local and international marine scientists and conservationists.
As a marine field station and training center, Cape RADD offers a marine biology course designed for students at various stages of their academic journeys. These courses provide practical, field-based learning experiences that complement classroom-based education. Students gain first-hand knowledge of marine ecosystems, research methodologies, and conservation strategies, preparing them for future careers in marine science and conservation.
In 2021 Impact Divers, a recreational scuba diving center was formed at the Ocean Hub. This adds an adventurous dimension to the learning experience. We offer a range of SSI diving courses from beginner to advanced levels, all the way to professional development training (Dive Master and Dive Instructor internships). Impact divers works alongside Cape RADD, training students as well visitors, with the mission to create ocean ambassadors, inspired to protect the marine environments they come to love through their underwater adventures.
Cape RADD and Impact Divers share state-of-the-art facilities, including lecture rooms, research laboratories, and dive equipment. This collaborative environment encourages interaction between scientists, students, divers, and the local community, fostering a culture of learning and adventure. The synergy between these entities creates a unique space where conservation science and recreational diving coexist, enriching the experience for all involved.
Together, Cape RADD and Impact Divers main objective is to inspire people to care about and protect the oceans. We do this by combining rigorous scientific research with thrilling underwater exploration and engaging activities. By creating compelling narratives that emphasize the importance of marine conservation and how everyone can help and contribute towards ocean conservation. We aim to make sure our participants leave with not only new skills and knowledge but also a renewed passion for preserving our planet’s precious marine ecosystems.
We hope that collaboration between Cape RADD and Impact Divers exemplifies the power of combining education, science, and adventure with self-sustaining ecotourism business models. This partnership nurtures a dynamic learning environment, engages the community in meaningful scientific endeavors, and promotes a deep-seated respect for our oceans. By fostering a synergy of knowledge, action, and inspiration, Cape RADD and Impact Divers are at the forefront of marine conservation and education, making a lasting impact on all who pass through their doors. We hope to continue to grow our impact in the years to come!
